Bristol Zoo Gardens
Bristol Zoo education
Bristol Zoo Gardens, a 12 acre site in Clifton, Bristol, was founded in 1835 by a group of eminent local citizens and opened to the public in 1836. It is the fifth oldest Zoo in the world, and the oldest one that is not in a capital city. Awarded ‘Zoo of the Year 2004′ by the Good Britain Guide, Bristol Zoo Gardens has a continuous reputation for excellence, innovation, and dedication to conservation. For more information visit: www.bristolzoo.org.uk

Bristol Zoo Gardens also plan to build a 55 hectare National Wildlife Conservation Park on the north fringe of Bristol. The park will forge a new benchmark for how zoos can support conservation in the wild and establish a more influential position for zoos in the global conservation movement. ss Great Britain
SS Great Britain
Winner of 14 major awards including Enjoy England ‘Large Visitor Attraction of the Year 2007′, European Museum of the Year’s “Micheletti Award”, and the Gulbenkian Prize for UK Museum of the Year, the ss Great Britain appears to be afloat in Bristol’s Harbourside, but descend beneath the glass ’sea’ to see how innovative technology is conserving Brunel’s engineering masterpiece.

Technological innovation, inspirational design and some truly revolutionary features lay behind the development of the ss Great Britain, the world’s first iron-hulled, steam-powered ocean going ship. Designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel (Right), the ship was built in 1843 at the Great Western Dockyard in Bristol, under the supervision of Brunel and his colleagues. Today you can explore the beautifully recreated First Class Dining Saloon, steerage quarters and new Engine Room. Audio tours and authentic smells help bring the 19th century experience alive.
